Jane Doe has a lot to learn about the world and an aristocratic Spanish exchange student named Manuel Fernando Ortega y Diaz de Rodriguez will gladly be her <i>very</i> personal tutor. Manuel admires her both for her beauty and for her scholarly erudition but Jane quickly comes to resent his attention and his advice. Determined to make some changes for the better Jane accepts his mentoring-all the while struggling to convince herself that she is making his changes for herself not simply to please him. And in spite of her suspicion and reservations she cannot resist the Spaniard's charms. She finds herself in love with the very man she swore she would never aim to please. Their young love is passionate and all-consuming but when a glamorous brunette by the name of Yvette la Flambee makes a sudden re-appearance on campus things get tricky. Yvette instantly sets her sights on Manuel ... and she's not the kind of girl to take no for an answer. However Manuel resists all Yvette's energetic and persistent flirtations much to Jane's happiness. And when she travels home for the Christmas holiday she can't stop thinking about the romantic date they have planned for New Year's Eve. But when she gets a telegram from Manuel telling her that he has been called away and must break their date she fears the worst.
