About The Book

A collection of WWII sketches andmemories Route Step by Roy Veary. The author served with the 70thInfantry Division in WWII. Captured by the Germans early in the Battleof the Bulge the book is mainly about his POW experiences. He repeatedlytried to escape and managed to break out of Stalag XIII at Hammelburg on threeoccasions. His time of freedom varied from hours to several days but wasrecaptured in each instance. He recounts first hand the attempt by GeneralPattons Third Army to free Pattons son-in-law from thecamp and how that raid raised then dashed the POWS hope of freedom. The author along with his American British Australian and Russian fellow prisoners wereeventually freed by the 3rd Infantry Division.
