From May 5 1996 to April 27 1997 Karl Gruber became the 9th man to ever successfully run and complete 52 marathons in 52 weeks. He called his year-long marathoning effort his Super Run for the Cure because he ran all 52 marathons to raise money and awareness for leukemia reseach and a cure. Despite not realizing what a gargantuan task lay ahead of him Gruber quit his 16 year-long job as a disc jockey at WHOK-FM in Lancaster Ohio rented out his home he owned in Hide-A-Way Hills Ohio and sent his beloved Golden Retreiver Bo to live with his parents for the year. Despite numerous obstacles and lack of funds he persisted in running 26.2 miles once-a-week for a year because he believed with all his heart (and his legs!) that he could and would accomplish this feat. This book Running for Their Lives is a recounting of each and every race he ran and the ensuing highs and lows the defeats the victories blind faith and lots of miles of running driving and flying!
