Ruth Arnold or the Country Cousin

Ruth Arnold is a young woman who lives in a rural village with her widowed mother. She is a devout Christian and leads a simple life. When her wealthy cousin Emily comes to visit she invites Ruth to live with her in the city. Ruth is hesitant at first but she eventually agrees hoping to improve her life and her mother's. In the city Ruth is exposed to a new way of life that is filled with wealth luxury and temptation. She begins to question her faith and her values. However she eventually realizes that the things of the world are not important and that true happiness comes from following God. She returns to her village and renews her faith.
