Rutledge by Miriam Coles Harris is a novel that begins with the protagonist a young girl leaving her boarding school St. Catharine's to live with her aunt and cousins. As the protagonist recuperates she learns about the history of the Rutledge family including the mysterious disappearance of Alice Mr. Rutledge's sister. The narrative explores themes of growth the passage from childhood to adulthood and the search for identity amidst unfamiliar surroundings. The protagonist's journey is not just physical but also emotional as she navigates her fears builds new relationships and uncovers the secrets of the Rutledge household.
