Between 1900 and 1901 the Hungarian-born archaeologist Aurel Stein (1862-1943) made the first of several significant trips through Central Asia. Illustrated with numerous photographs this 1903 publication contains a detailed report of his journey covering important archaeological excavations and discoveries notably Sanskrit texts of Buddhist scriptures.
