His Lordship was England's First Lord of the Admiralty Secretary of State for the Northern Department Post Master General and perhaps most important at least to us today he is the man after whom Captain Cook named the Sandwich Islands in 1778. In addition to all of the above he was a rake and a gambler who is said to have invented the sandwich as a time saving nourishment to be enjoyed while properly engaged in a twenty-four hour long gambling session in 1762. He died in London England on April 30 1792 and National Sandwich Day named in his honor is celebrated on his birthday November 3.
