Savonius Wind Turbine Optimization via Blade Angular Offset Mechanism

About The Book

The extensive use of fossil fuels has caused significant environmental problems making the recovery of energy from renewable sources crucial to mitigate CO₂ emissions and the greenhouse effect. Small-scale Savonius wind turbines offer a viable renewable alternative. To improve their performance a modified Savonius design incorporating a blade angular offset mechanism was proposed to reduce resistant torque on the convex side of the driven blade. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this mechanism and the numerical model was validated against experimental data. Results demonstrated that the proposed design increased the Savonius turbine's power coefficient by up to 42.6%.
