Savva and the Life of Man: Two plays by Leonid Andreyev

About The Book

In Savva Andreyev tells the story of Savva an anarchist and self-proclaimed revolutionary who arrives in a small town intending to blow up a monastery as a symbolic act of rebellion against the oppressive forces of religion and society. However as the plot unfolds Savva's motives and ideals come under scrutiny highlighting the futility and moral ambiguity of his actions. Through biting satire Andreyev examines the disillusionment that often accompanies radical ideals and the impact of misguided attempts to achieve social change. The Life of Man is a more introspective symbolic work that traces the entire arc of a man's life in five acts from birth to death. Each act represents a different stage in Man’s life touching on themes of hope love ambition despair and mortality. The play is framed by an ominous figure Someone in Grey who oversees Man's life as a passive observer representing fate or an indifferent universe. Through Man's journey Andreyev reflects on the human condition the inevitability of suffering and the search for purpose within the constraints of a fleeting existence.
