School Counseling and Counselor Intervention

<p><em>School Counseling and Counselor Intervention</em> provides students with a valuable collection of readings and case studies that help them develop the knowledge required to become effective school counselors. The textbook equips future counselors with the skills they need to treat and remove the personal and social issues proven to impede academic success. <br /><br />In Part I of the text students learn about the history of school counseling the essential characteristics of a successful counselor and various approaches to improving the effectiveness of the practice. Part II focuses on school counselor intervention introducing readers to strategic approaches and illuminating case studies that address topics including increasing academic performance of underachieving students meeting the unique needs of low-income students utilizing play therapy techniques and handling the mental health issues that affect modern campuses including ADHD relational aggression anxiety and more. Additional chapters cover career development for high school students social justice and multiculturalism and school violence. <br /><br />Designed to address the changing role of the school counselor <em>School Counseling and Counselor Intervention</em> is well suited for courses with focus on counseling social work or mental health practice within school settings.</p><p><strong>Delila Owens</strong> is an associate professor and coordinator of the School Counseling program at The University of Akron. Dr. Owens earned her doctorate degree in counselor education from Michigan State University and her master’s degree in counseling from Central Michigan University. Her primary areas of research include school counseling multicultural counseling and equity in education.</p>
