School Safety and Academic Achievement in East Asian Countries

A safe environment is a prerequisite for productive learning but in reality bullying and violence in school is a global phenomenon.Besides the philosophy of Confucianism which has a long history of influencing the value and goal of students in East Asian countries. This book focuses on three questions: (1)Is students’ perception of school safety a key determined factor which influences their performance in academic achievement? (2)Is there gender difference on the relationship between school safety and academic achievement in these four top-performing East Asian countries? (3)Beyond for the high-performing in academic achievement is there an East Asian model? Dr. Jen Jang Sheu assesses whether there is cross-cultural differences in the measurement of school safety with its relationship to the academic achievement. He also explores whether there exists a so-called “East Asian Model” which sustained the high performance in TIMSS all along.
