This autobiography shares the life of James T. Johnson born in the small Alabama town of Abbeville in 1946 following WWII. He learned at a young age about the lynching of a relative in 1937 and an aunt by marriage who was raped in 1944. Before graduating high school James swore that he would never return to Alabama. Roaming aimlessly through various cities James eventually settled in his old hometown where he was questioned about his origins because he didn't talk or act like the local Black community. The Johnson family was related to many in the area yet he once again met resistance. Successful for a while his name was tarnished by some local officials. Once again he abandoned his efforts to live in a place he hated. Driven by a more powerful internal force to return home he remembered the promise: I will cause those who wished you harm to bless you. God's promises never failed.
