One of the greatest English poets Robert Browning had a vivid imagination that allowed him to turn any topic no matter how mundane or lofty into unforgettable verse. In his writing he brought to life the personalities of a wide variety of characters and gave the poetry of his day new immediacy vernacular vigour and psychological complexity. The verse in this collection ranges from early theatrical monologues like the eerie My Last Duchess and the sardonic Fra Lippo Lippi which display the poet's talent for entering another person's head to the well-known children's poem The Pied Piper of Hamelin and numerous lesser-known pieces.
