Underwood was a Canadian soldier veteran of WW1 a WW2 reservist and a world-renown Ju Jitsu instructor.</p><p></p><p>In this 1944 guide for women he showcases his art of 'Combato' as a means to help keep ladies safe from the typical attacks and harassment of the era.</p><p></p><p>As a Judoka boxer Ju Jitsu and military combatives expert his curricula draws on a wide range of sources - and all techniques are supported by clear photography sketches and follow-along descriptions.</p><p></p><p>Peppered throughout are anecdotes and stories of these techniques used by Underwood's students too. Known as 'Bill' he famously used his Judo to escape a WW1 prison camp and was known to have taught civilians and soldiers in WW2 in preparedness for combat.</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p>
