In this new book of verses Renée takes a risk: in a time of anger in full bloom her words take a road much less travelled. Rather than being seduced by the wonderful power of anger she asks a bigger question of the reader: what do you do when the anger doesn't work? It may be our advocate and champion but as a tool it is a blunt instrument. Anger serves us well by waking us up from complacency and turning a bright light on injustice but by itself it brings no justice; only the escalation of anger meeting more anger. It takes courage to confront the seduction and suggest we break that ancient cycle: What else is there? Where do we go from here?
