Short bowel syndrome

Short bowel syndrome (SIS) is characterised by intestinal insufficiency most often the result of extensive intestinal resection; it causes severe hydroelectrolytic and nutritional disorders such as vitamin deficiency and malnutrition. The primary objectives of this book are to explain and analyse the various forms of clinical and surgical management both traditional and innovative. Greater clarity about the pathophysiological and adaptive mechanisms that occur in the short intestine has in recent times led to progress in surgical techniques new drugs and the promising technique of intestinal tissue engineering thus promoting greater expectations and expectations among health professionals and above all among those suffering from this syndrome.
