Sign Language

This book undertakes research into South African Sign Language. This is done against the backdrop of a global prespective in order to assess best practices. The book not only covers historical aspects of the development of Sign Language globally and in South Africa but it also explores the role of Sign Language in education. It is suggested that Sign Language be recognised as a twelfth official language in South Africa. Furthermore lessons from countries such as Sweden America and Britain suggest that much still needs to be done in South Africa in order to create appropriate educational curricula and to further enhance the status of Sign Language.
