Simulation-based representation of the application limits of Kanban

This paper takes a critical look at Kanban systems by testing fundamental assumptions for this production control concept using a generic model in the AnyLogic 7 simulation programme. The generic model is exposed to different system loads such as fluctuating demand or long set-up times and the effects on performance are examined. It discusses the conditions under which Kanban systems can be disadvantageous for manufacturing companies.
