Smoke from Distant Fires

Millie Bryson discovers Shawnee Indians in her familys past. Its 1925 and memories of the Indian Wars and what happened to some of the early settlers are still fresh in some of their minds. The kids in her eighth grade class at school tease her and call her an Indian-lover. Her friend Silvia tries to find peace from Old Grandfather. When Silvia goes missing its up to Millie and her friends to find her in time. But they find the man in the straw hat. Did he hurt Silvia or save her? Millies dad accepts his own challenge and speaks up for an Indian. But Millie does not want to stand out or be noticed. Will she stand up for her ancestors and her friends? Can she overcome teasing and bullying and embrace her distant past?
