As you read the book's dialogue it's as if you're actually hearing the words with your ears instead of reading them with your eyes. That is a true gift. Too often even today when people say the word Vietnam they are referring to the Vietnam War. Le's novels based on her family's true story help American readers see that Vietnam is a country not a war-and one that many of its people felt forced to flee.
