<i>Sociology in the Everyday: Teaching with Visual Media</i> uses video Wikipedia Edmodo TED talks Netflix and other visual tools to engage students' interest in sociology. The media excerpts bring sociology to life. They demonstrate that sociological principles and perspectives can be used to move beyond the superficial and observe society in a deeper more meaningful way.<br><br>Through the media excerpts students explore contemporary issues such as socialization and deviance popular culture and technology health and medicine race and ethnicity gender family sports food and religion.<br><br>In addition to the media samples chapters include terminology concise examples of important concepts a selection of assignments and rubric for each. The book allows professors to move away from assigning outside reading to help students prepare for a more online based and interactive environment. <i>Sociology in the Everyday</i> makes it possible for the classroom experience to center on discussion interaction and analysis.<br><br><i>Sociology in the Everyday</i> is designed for introductory or social problems courses in sociology. It can be used in classes that explore popular culture or social stratification and is an excellent supplement for courses on media in society or media communication.<br><br><b>Giovanna Follo</b> earned her Ph.D. from Wayne State University and her M.A. from University of Windsor. She is currently an assistant professor of sociology at Wright University – Lake Campus. Her focus is to create an environment where students can view the world through a sociological lens and become active thinkers and agents of social awareness. Professor Follo’s research focuses on popular culture gender and women particularly in martial arts.
