Soldiers' Pay

About The Book

The story revolves around Donald Mahon a disfigured and dying aviator who returns to his small Southern town after the war. His arrival disrupts the lives of those connected to him: his fiancée Cecily Saunders who struggles to reconcile her feelings with his physical and emotional changes; his devoted father Reverend Mahon; and Margaret Powers a compassionate widow who forms a bond with Donald. Accompanying Donald are Joe Gilligan a cynical but loyal soldier and Julian Lowe an idealistic young man. Together they navigate the societal expectations and personal disillusionment of post-war life. Donald's decline becomes a metaphor for the lost generation embodying the physical and emotional scars left by the war.
