SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

About The Book

Solid waste management is one of the major challenges globally as the generation and disposal of waste have direct and indirect linkages to economic development and the health and welfare of the community. Solid waste dumping is a severe problem in Gondar City since the majority of solid wastes generated are not dumped in an appropriate area. Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing techniques are important for selecting solid waste sites. The main objective of the present book is to use GIS and Remote Sensing technology for the effective identification of suitable solid waste dumping sites that will minimize environmental risk and human health problems. Using SPOT satellite images maps were prepared by overlaying and suitability analysis of GIS remote sensing techniques and multi-criteria analysis methods. The final suitability map was prepared by overlay analyses on an Arc map and leveled as Not suitable Less Suitable Moderately suitable Highly suitable and regions of the study area were determined. This book meets the requirements of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in civil engineering Disaster Management Environmental Science and Geography.
