Something New

About The Book

Something New by P. G. Wodehouse is a comedic novel set in early 20th-century England revolving around the lives of several characters whose paths intersect in unexpected ways. The story begins with Ashe Marson a young writer of detective stories who is feeling discontented with his life. His chance encounter with Joan Valentine a spirited and adventurous young woman inspires him to seek new opportunities. Meanwhile the Honorable Freddie Threepwood a somewhat dim-witted younger son of the Earl of Emsworth finds himself in a predicament involving a breach-of-promise case due to his past indiscretions with a chorus girl. Freddie seeks the help of R. Jones a jovial but somewhat shady character to retrieve incriminating letters. Simultaneously the absent-minded Earl of Emsworth is in London blissfully unaware of his son's troubles. He is more concerned with his visit to Mr. Peters an American millionaire with a collection of scarabs and the marriage arrangement of his son to Mr. Peters' daughter Aline. The narrative weaves through these characters' lives highlighting their quirks and the social dynamics of the time. Wodehouse's signature humor and wit are evident as he explores themes of social class change and the pursuit of happiness.
