Sonata Ave Maria Op. 5a

Fleeing conscription into Napoleon's army Kuhlau landed in Copenhagen with a stack of manuscripts under his arm. Riding on the popularity of his piano concerto this sonata was one of the first of his works to be published but it already shows a glimmering of the Romantic genius in his stride. Based on a version of the Ave Maria it is the only religiously inspired work of his entire career and in it Kuhlau exhibits the creative flair which would earn him the reputation of one of the most progressive of composers.-Kuhlau der vor dem Einzug in die Armee Napoleons flüchtete landete mit einem Stapel von Manuskripten unter dem Arm in Kopenhagen. Von der Popularität seines Klavierkonzertes profitierend war diese Sonate eines der ersten Werke die veröffentlicht wurden zeigt mit ihrem vorpreschenden Elan aber bereits einen Schimmer des romantischen Genies. Sie basiert auf einer Version des Ave Maria und ist das einzige religiös inspirierte Werk seiner gesamten Laufbahn. Doch schon hier zeigt Kuhlau das kreative Flair das ihm den Ruf eines der progressivsten Komponisten einbringen würde.
