Songs In The Shade (1881)

Songs In The Shade is a collection of African-American folk songs compiled by Henry Doman in 1881. The book contains over 100 songs including spirituals work songs and ballads all of which were popular in the Southern United States during the 19th century. The songs were collected by Doman during his travels through the South where he recorded the music and lyrics as they were performed by local singers. The book includes detailed notes on the origins and meanings of each song as well as information on the cultural and historical context in which they were created.
