Spatial distribution of agricultural product price differentials

We analyze the spatial distribution of agricultural commodity price differentials in Senegal between markets its evolution over time and the proximate determinants using monthly price data for 21 agricultural commodities and 21 markets in Senegal.By highlighting five (05) agricultural products that are essential to the well-being of Senegalese the econometric analysis shows that the spatial distribution of agricultural product price differentials in Senegal is positively associated with the level of transport infrastructure and the existing distance between markets at the regional level. However there is sufficient room to promote rail transport at more affordable prices than road transport for a better spatial distribution of agricultural price differentials.In addition prices have increased in recent years which shows that the positive effects of recent policy initiatives and actions implemented so far are weak and would need to be taken into account in the prospects for economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
