Excerpt from Speech of Hon. John L. Dawson of Pennsylvania on the Homestead Bill: Delivered in the House of Representatives on Tuesday February 14 1854. Gen. Jackson in his annual message to Congress in 1832 stated: It cannot be doubted that the speedy settlement of these lands constitute the true inter ests of the republic. The wealth and strength of a country are its population; and the best part of the population are the cultivators of the soil. Independent farmers are everywhere the basis of society and true friends of liberty.
