Sports and leisure policy as emancipatory education for young people

This book is the result of action research carried out in conjunction with the Municipal Sports and Leisure Policy of the city of Recife between 2002 and 2008. The main objective of the study was to investigate the contradictions and possibilities of a sports and leisure policy contributing to the emancipatory education of young people with a view to strengthening the working classes in the struggle for a new hegemony. Analysing the relationships between young people free time and leisure in the era of the programmable machine under the hegemony of the capitalist system the study highlights the role of youth in the struggle for the transformation of the social order emphasising the strategic importance of cultural manifestations of free time in the process of emancipatory education and defending their space in the political and social programmes of democratic-popular governments.
