About The Book

Stanley in Africa is a biographical work written by James P. Boyd that tells the story of the famous explorer and journalist Henry Morton Stanley and his adventures in Africa during the late 19th century. Henry Morton Stanley was born in Wales in 1841 and was sent to live in a workhouse at the age of six. He eventually made his way to America and became a journalist traveling to various parts of the world to report on the news. In 1869 Stanley was hired by the New York Herald to find the Scottish explorer David Livingstone who had disappeared in Africa while on a mission to find the source of the Nile River. Stanley set out on a perilous journey that took him through the heart of Africa battling disease hostile tribes and treacherous terrain. After months of searching Stanley finally found Livingstone in 1871 uttering the famous phrase Dr. Livingstone I presume? The two men spent several months together before Stanley returned to Europe where he became a celebrity and wrote about his adventures in Africa. Stanley in Africa is a fascinating account of Stanleys expeditions in Africa as well as his personal life and career as a journalist and explorer.
