Strange News from Another Star

Seven of these tales were collected in 1919 the same year Demian was published in a book titled Märchen which is German for fairy tales. We have organised this first English version in accordance with the choices Hesse made for the final collected edition of his writings to which he added an eighth story called Flute Dream. Hesse believed that some of these stories written between 1913 and 1918 the time period that brought him into conflict with pro-war individuals with his country and its government with conventional intellectual life and with every form of orthodoxy both in the outside world and within himself were the first to sound the new note so distinct in Demian. The stories in Strange News from Another Star differ from his prior works which range from Peter Camenzind to Knulp.
