Barry served in the Crimea and was a contemporary of Florence Nightingale. Barry was also a pioneer in the field of medicine whose innovative treatments of some of the most deadly diseases of the time resulted in saving numerous lives. After the doctor's death in 1865 it was discovered that James Barry was really a woman. Her tale is told by her friends including Sandy Mackinnon an army medic Sir Charles Somerset her lover and the father of her child and Fredrick Smithers a lifelong friend and the man who adopted her daughter.
