Study of organic carbon in two Tunisian agricultural systems

About The Book

The aim of this study is to assess the spatial distribution of total organic carbon (TOC) content and stock in two agricultural plots located in El Krib (north-west Tunisia) farmed using conventional and no-till methods respectively. Following a literature review on soil degradation issues and sustainable farming practices the study was based on physico-chemical soil analyses (pH conductivity phosphorus exchangeable bases TOC) and spatial modeling of TOC stocks. The results show that no-till favors better preservation of organic carbon in the soil compared with conventional tillage. Correlations between soil parameters and TOC were established underlining the importance of conservation practices for carbon sequestration. This study highlights the value of sustainable soil management in combating soil degradation and improving long-term fertility.
