Such Things Are is a five-act play by Elizabeth Inchbald set on the island of Sumatra during the colonial period. The narrative revolves around the themes of justice compassion and the human condition under oppressive regimes. The play opens with Sir Luke Tremor and his wife Lady Tremor discussing the intricacies of their social circle and the political climate. Meanwhile Mr. Haswell a benevolent Englishman visits the local prison where he encounters various prisoners suffering under the harsh conditions imposed by the Sultan's regime. Haswell's interactions with the prisoners including a poignant encounter with a female prisoner and a young man named Elvirus highlight the themes of mercy and the potential for redemption. The play critiques the arbitrary nature of power and the shift of colonial rule on both the colonizers and the colonized.
