About The Book

The Anonymous author of this account of the Mahratta and Pindarree Campaign probably wrote his book under the pen name 'Carnaticus' because of his trenchant and unsparing criticism of his superior officers and their conduct of the campaigns. He was actually an Irish officer in the Madras Army named Marshal Clarke. Born in 1789 Clarke died at the early age of 44 in Peronne northern France on his way home from India. His book - accompanied by beautifully engraved maps - was first published in 1820 and gives a clear and lengthy account of the operations in 1817 1818 and 1819 of the armies of the East India Company - particularly the Army of the Deckan - under the orders of the Marquis of Hastings and the direct command of Lt.-Gen. Sir T. Hislop. This is a rare book which will be of compelling interest to all students of the early British Raj and the Indian Wars.
