Surgical Oncology

Surgery is the primary mode of treatment for solid isolated tumors. It can have a significant impact in the prolongation of survival and palliation. After a biopsy is performed on the affected area to determine the presence or absence of the cancer along with the stage of cancer surgery is performed. In localized cancer surgery is done to remove the entire mass and in certain cases the lymph nodes. Such an intervention is deemed sufficient in some cases while in others treatment modalities such as radiotherapy chemotherapy targeted therapy etc. are also put to use. The branch of surgery that is concerned with the surgical management of cancerous tumors is known as surgical oncology.
