About The Book

Sword and Crozier is a historical drama by Icelandic playwright Indridi Einarsson first performed in 1885. The play is set in the 11th century and explores the conflict between the Viking warrior spirit and the growing influence of Christianity in Iceland. The central character Thorodd is a powerful Viking leader who faces internal and external struggles as he must decide whether to accept Christianity which is being imposed upon the Icelandic people or remain loyal to the traditional pagan gods and warrior code. The tension between Thorodd and his adoptive brother Bishop Sigurð who represents the Christian faith is the core of the drama. While Sigurð seeks to bring peace and spiritual salvation through the church Thorodd believes that the sword and the old ways are the true path to honor and power. This conflict is further complicated by the characters' personal relationships including Thorodd’s love for a woman who stands as a symbol of the nation’s cultural transition. The play captures the clash of values between the new Christian ideals and the old Viking warrior culture.
