In Tales and Novels Vol. X Helen the main character exemplifies an angelically virtuous heroine which can feel somewhat unrealistic. Entirely lovable and selfless Helen often allows her friend Cecilia to exploit her kindness resulting in emotional distress for both. Cecilia is a good person but lacks strong moral character choosing the easier path and resorting to lies to avoid pain which leads to her own sorrow.The male protagonists Granville Beauclerc and General Clarendon are underdeveloped and too idealized frequently urging the women to be honest while lacking depth themselves. Although Beauclerc is charming he appears headstrong and fanciful while Helen remains somewhat flat primarily defined by her goodness and her talent for playing the harp.Lady Davenant stands out as the most interesting character providing a voice of reason throughout the narrative.
