About The Book

The story is set in the town of Tarascon located in the south of France and it revolves around the character Tartarin whose full name is Tartarin de Tarascon. Tartarin is a middle-aged man who lives a quiet and uneventful life in Tarascon but is known for his vivid imagination and tendency to exaggerate his own exploits.Tartarin despite never having left his hometown presents himself as a great adventurer and big-game hunter boasting of his courage and daring. He often regales the townspeople with exaggerated tales of his imaginary adventures in exotic locales such as Africa. However the townspeople are aware of Tartarin's penchant for embellishment and they humor him.The novel takes a comedic turn when Tartarin's fantasies collide with reality. He is convinced to embark on an actual adventure to Algeria to hunt lions which he views as his chance to prove his bravery. The resulting misadventures misunderstandings and humorous situations form the heart of the story.Tartarin of Tarascon is a satirical work that satirizes the romanticism and bravado often associated with adventure literature and the grandiose self-image that some individuals cultivate.
