Teacher Leadership in the Greek context: Practices and prospects

About The Book

Teacher Leadership as discussed within the context of Distributed Leadership has received increasing attention in several educational contexts. The disconnection between leadership and formal positions and principal leadership has recognized that multiple individuals can enhance the effective practice of leadership especially teachers who contribute significantly to school effectiveness and improvement. Although teacher leadership is expected to thrive in decentralised educational systems it is questionable whether it can be developed in highly bureaucratized educational contexts where teachers possess relatively limited autonomy. The study presented in the book explores Greek secondary teachers’ perceptions on teacher leadership thus shedding light to the current situation in Greek secondary schools in relation to school leadership. As a result the study both encourages readers to question the principal-centred leadership as well as brings to the foreground the idea of teacher leadership as a promising leadership option.
