About The Book

The current situation in schools is characterised by competition among school heads and teachers as well for higher grades in final public examinations. Most teachers are working towards completing the syllabus; teaching for examinations as well as getting better grades in the Results-Based Personnel Performance System (RBPPS). Stratified random sampling technique was applied to systematically select a sample of 39 primary school teachers from 11 Masvingo urban schools based on their professional qualifications to solicit their attitudes towards the application of meaningful learning. The research findings can be summarized as follows: - Out of the sample 46% had BED; 28% had Diploma in Education; 13% had Certificate in Education; 8% had Master’s degree while T3 and PhD had 3% apiece; - 92% of the respondents were senior teachers while 8% were ordinary teachers; - 72% of the respondents had 11 years & above experience; 7.7% had 10-11 years; 10% had between 8-9 years while 6-7 years; 4-5 years had 2.5% apiece with 2-3 years having 5%;More than three quarters of the respondents agreed that meaningful learning involves the use of learners’ prior knowledge when teaching.
