That Question

This story depicts a young girls experience with selective mutism (an anxiety related condition in which the sufferer becomes mute in select situations - typically at school). The protagonist of this story enjoys a relatively happy childhood and even many aspects of school. However her inability to speak at school presents hurdles and challenges. She uses non verbal forms of communication in order to navigate her school day. Ultimately the girl yearns to feel she belongs. The last thing she wants is to feel different. Unfortunately there is one particular question that she dreads. The question of why shines a harsh spotlight on the girls difference. Ultimately this is a story of a girl who despite adversity never gives up hope.
