In That Stick an overlooked woman of strong principle faces a life of familial obligation often dismissed and belittled by those around her. Deemed dull and unremarkable by society she persists in caring for her relatives and navigating social expectations with quiet resilience. Her lack of vanity and consistent self-sacrifice earn her little affection yet she remains a moral center amid superficial peers. As years pass and circumstances shift those who once scorned her come to rely on her unshakable strength. The novel explores the emotional costs of duty and the quiet power of a life lived for others challenging assumptions about value fulfillment and the kinds of women who go unnoticed yet hold families together.

Charlotte Mary Yonge (1823-1901) began writing in 1848 and published about 100 works chiefly novels.
