The Adventurous Streak

In this Malaysian tale a young man decides to leave his gambling father and Pulau Tikus to seek his own future in a different town. He boards the train to Markata changes his name and prepares to begin a new chapter. In the first half of the last century in the then Malaya one's social standing in the Chinese community depended on wealth or heritage or profession. Yik Kwei's The Adventurous Streak gives us a first hand view of that past era to be treasured as much as the characters living within it. Readers will be moved by this tale of changing times leading to that all too familiar struggle between filial past and opportunistic future.
