About The Book

The novel follows the story of Lambert Strether a middle-aged widower from Woollett Massachusetts who is sent to Europe by his wealthy fiancée Mrs. Newsome on a mission to retrieve her wayward son Chad Newsome. Strether is appointed as an ambassador of sorts tasked with persuading Chad to return to America and take up his responsibilities in the family business. As Strether arrives in Paris he is captivated by the cosmopolitan and sophisticated atmosphere of the city.
