By the time she's a teenager Gertrude Ravenscombe has a heart as black as the coal that comes out of the mines her father toils in every day.<p> Although she never loves Gertrude does give birth to a baby boy. She names him Luther for no particular reason and even though he annoys her with his good-natured personality she can never bring herself to harm him.<p> Luther eventually marries and has a child of his own Genevieve leaving his mother free to go about her evil plotting.
