The Argentine crisis of 2001 and the role of the IMF

About The Book

The author examined the 2001 crisis in Argentina and the role played by the IMF. Chapter two began by explaining the original goals and tasks of the IMF and how these have changed over the 70 years since its inception. Chapter three examined the historical and economic missteps of the country in the 20th century and how they led to the crisis. Chapters four and five formed the main focus of the thesis examining in more detail the causes background and effects of the economic and political missteps that ultimately led to national bankruptcy in 2001 while also taking a closer look at the political economic social and societal consequences of the structural adjustment programmes proposed by the IMF. The final chapter examined whether under the current economic and political conditions it is possible that Argentina could slide back into a crisis similar to that of 2001 in the near future.
