Central to the narrative are the Atheling daughters Agnes and Marion who are each dealing with their own struggles. Agnes who has literary aspirations finds herself confronting the difficulties of pursuing a career as a writer in a male-dominated field. Marion on the other hand grapples with the complexities of love and relationships as she is courted by several suitors with varying intentions.
