She refuses to marry and confine herself to a domestic life and pursues freedom in all walks of life. She is faced with unfortunate consequences in a conventional atmosphere. The Awakening by Kate Chopin was one of the first American novels to explore womens issues and feminism. It was an out-of-the-ordinary attempt to change notions of what is expected of a woman by society and how she can dare to defy these expectations.
