THE BAITAL PACHCHISI OR THE TWENTY-FIVE TALES OF A SPRITE

About The Book

The frame narrative of The Baital Pachisi centers around the legendary King Vikramaditya a wise and brave ruler who is tasked by a yogi (ascetic) to capture a vampire-like spirit called Baital. The Baital resides in a tree and possesses a corpse making it difficult to capture. Every time King Vikramaditya tries to bring the Baital back to the yogi the Baital escapes by telling a story with a moral or philosophical dilemma at the end. The Baital challenges the king to solve the riddle at the end of each tale and if the king answers correctly the Baital returns to the tree. If the king fails to answer the Baital promises to remain silent and be taken to the yogi. The twenty-five tales told by the Baital are a diverse mix of stories involving kings merchants warriors and common people. They often revolve around themes of loyalty justice cleverness and the complexities of human nature. Each story is designed to test the wisdom patience and morality of King Vikramaditya.
